Orthopaediusu.com, JAKARTA — Bintang Charlie’s Angels Drew Barrymore kept the cord blood of her first daughter, Olive, after doctors alerted her to its potential benefits. He later did the same with his second daughter, Frankie.

“It can have an impact on our families and in some cases can even save our children’s lives,” said Barrymore in footage from “The Drew Barrymore Show”, some time ago.

This is because stem cells can take the form of other cells, and fluid collected from the umbilical cord has 10 times more stem cells than that collected from bone marrow (another source of stem cells). It also rarely carries infectious diseases and is half as likely to be rejected as adult stem cells.

Stem cells can be used to treat conditions such as certain immune system diseases, genetic and neurological disorders, and some forms of cancer. An obstetrician and gynecologist who is also a spokesperson for the Cord Blood Registry company that maintains and stores stem cells, Christine Sterling, explained that the umbilical cord consists of tissue and contains blood.

“Those tissues and blood are a rich source of stem cells with the potential to act like our body’s personal repair kit,” Sterling said at the same event.

“When I heard about something I could put in the bank to save me another day, I immediately signed my two daughters up for it,” says Barrymore.

Reported Insiders, Wednesday (24/5/2023), the benefits of routine cord blood storage for everyone are still being questioned. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Medical Association (AMA) stress that the cost of storing cord blood as a form of “biological insurance” is high and that the costs outweigh the benefits.

That’s partly because the blood may never be used. Even if it is used, it will most likely be given to a sibling.

Even so, some families hope that in the future more treatments will become available from “cord bloodThe probability that a child’s privately stored cord blood will be used by them is very low.

For example, due to a genetic mutation causing a disorder that requires treatment, it will be present in the blood. The AAP and AMA do not recommend routine storage of cord blood, but it can be useful if a sibling has a condition that can be treated using stem cells.
